Why it matters

Every lesson in Sell has been building toward this moment: an actual conversation where you ask a stranger for money and wait for their answer. That wait is the hardest part. It is normal for your stomach to drop right before you hit send or pick up the phone — that feeling does not mean you are doing something wrong.

A sales conversation has a shape: you listen first, to understand what the person actually needs. You diagnose — say back what you heard, so they know you understood. You propose your offer, matched to what they told you, not a generic pitch. Then you ask, directly, for the sale. Most beginners skip the ask entirely and just describe the product, hoping the other person will offer to buy. They usually will not. You have to actually ask.

You will hear “let me think about it” a lot, and it usually means something more specific — a real objection they have not said out loud yet. Getting curious about what is really behind that sentence, instead of walking away, is most of what separates people who make a sale from people who almost do.

This is the Sell gate. Twenty real asks, logged honestly including the ones that fail, until one stranger — not a friend, not family — actually pays you.

What to watch for

How to Sell by Tyler Bosmeny

  • Watch for the shape of a sales conversation: listen, diagnose, propose, ask.
  • Notice how directly he asks for the sale — no hinting, no waiting for the other person to offer.
  • Skip any references to enterprise or business software sales; adapt the structure to your own offer and audience.

Never Split the Difference | Chris Voss | Talks at Google

  • Watch for “mirroring” — repeating back someone’s last few words to get them to keep explaining themselves.
  • Watch for “labeling” — naming the emotion you’re hearing (“it sounds like you’re worried about…”) to defuse it.
  • Notice how a “no”-oriented question (“Would it be crazy to…”) can get an honest answer faster than a plain yes-or-no ask.

Start with Claude

Use Claude to prepare for conversations and process what happened afterward — never to write the actual message you send. The words in front of a real person have to be yours.

I'm running 20 sales asks for the Sell gate of Make First. Here's my offer and price: [describe it]. I'm about to reach out to [describe the person or lead].

Don't write my sales message. Instead, ask me questions to help me prepare: what does this specific person actually need, what objection are they likely to raise, and how will I ask directly for the sale instead of just describing the product? After each real conversation, I'll tell you what happened — help me log the outcome and the objection honestly, and ask me what I'd try differently next time, instead of telling me what to say.
