Harry Dry's rules for a headline a stranger understands instantly, with no marketing-speak.

Why it matters

You just hit the Make gate: a working thing at a public URL. Now, before you move into Launch and start sending it to strangers, you spend one hour making sure the front door actually makes sense. Right now, a first-time visitor probably has to guess what your thing is, who it is for, and what to click. That guessing is where you lose people.

This is not a redesign. You are not adding features or spending days on colors and fonts. You are fixing four specific things: your headline should be your one-liner, in plain words. There should be exactly one button that says clearly what happens when you click it. There should be one real screenshot of your product actually working, not a stock image. And your first name should be somewhere on the page, because a real person behind a product reads very differently than a faceless company.

The test for whether it worked is not your own opinion — it is showing the page to three of your ten people for five seconds and asking two questions: what does this do, and who is it for? If all three answer correctly, your front door works. If they get it wrong or hesitate, that tells you exactly what to fix, and you fix it before you spend any real energy on outreach next module.

What to watch for

Kevin Hale - How to Improve Conversion Rates

  • Watch for the “one button” idea: a page with a single, obvious next step converts better than one with five competing options.
  • Notice how he talks about the visitor’s confusion as the real enemy, not a lack of features or polish.
  • Skip the benchmark numbers for specific industries; the principle of removing confusion is what applies to you.

Copywriting secrets from Harry Dry

  • Watch for his test of whether a reader can picture what you are describing in their head within a second or two.
  • Notice how much he cuts vague, generic phrases in favor of specific, plain language.
  • Skip any examples aimed at big companies with big budgets; focus on the headline and clarity rules, which cost nothing to apply.

Start with Claude

Paste your current headline and page copy, and let Claude interrogate it the way a skeptical stranger would, instead of rewriting it for you.

I'm polishing my landing page for the Make First path. Here's my one-liner: [paste it]. Here's my current headline, button text, and any other copy on the page: [paste it].

Don't rewrite my copy for me. Instead, act like a stranger seeing this page for the first time: tell me honestly what you think the product does and who it's for, based only on what I gave you. Point out anywhere the wording is vague or where you had to guess. Then ask me questions to help me sharpen it myself, one piece at a time - headline first, then the button, then the screenshot caption.

Make

Update your landing page so it passes a 5-second test: show it to 3 of your 10 people for 5 seconds and ask what it does and who it is for.

Checkpoint

All 3 people answer correctly, and the page is updated to match.
