The 100-Touch Outreach Sprint

Find where your people already are, write a real message, and reach out to 100 of them.

~120 min Launch Week 5

Deliverable: An Outreach Tracker (name, channel, date, message, reply, used?) plus 3 message templates - a DM, an email, and a community post - each opening with an honest "I'm a student building this" line.

Part of the Make First Path

Launch stage First User

Pass this stage's gate (20 strangers used it, or 100 logged outreach touches) and you earn your First User.

A blunt, high-volume take on reaching out directly instead of waiting for people to find you.

Why it matters

This lesson is not comfortable, and it is not supposed to be. A hundred messages is a lot, and most of them will get no reply at all. That is normal, not a sign you are doing it wrong. Direct outreach at volume is how almost every real product finds its first users, before any algorithm or ad campaign ever gets involved - you find where people with your problem already hang out, and you talk to them, one at a time.

Being honest about who you are is your advantage here, not a weakness to hide. Every message you send - DM, email, or community post - opens with something like “I’m a student building this,” said plainly and without embarrassment. People respond well to a real teenager building a real thing far more often than they respond to something that sounds like generic marketing copy.

You will track every single touch: who, where, when, what you said, whether they replied, whether it led anywhere. That tracker is not busywork - it is how you notice which channel and which message actually work, so you can do more of what is working instead of guessing. A hundred logged touches is half the Launch gate on its own, alongside 20 strangers who used your thing.

What to watch for

How to Get Your First Customers | Startup School

  • Watch for why Alströmer says the first customers almost always come from things that do not scale, like personal messages, not ads.
  • Notice how specific and personal the outreach examples are, compared to generic marketing.
  • Skip any references to tools or platforms that feel out of reach; the underlying method - find people, message them directly - works anywhere.

Watch this to get your first 5 customers

  • Watch for the emphasis on volume: a small number of replies out of many attempts is expected, not a failure.
  • Notice how directly the messages get to the point instead of over-explaining or apologizing.
  • Skip any tone or language that does not fit a message from a student; take the volume principle, not the exact wording.

Start with Claude

Bring Claude your product and your one-liner, and let it help you find real channels and sharpen your templates - it should not write your final messages for you.

I'm starting a 100-touch outreach sprint for the Launch stage of Make First. My product is: [paste your one-liner]. Here are the communities, platforms, and people I already know who might have this problem: [paste details].

Ask me questions to help me find more specific places my actual people spend time, instead of suggesting generic ones. Then help me draft a DM, an email, and a community post template, each starting with an honest "I'm a student building this" line - push me to cut anything that sounds like a sales pitch. Don't write the final versions for me; react to my drafts and tell me where they sound fake or too long.

Parent note

Community posts and public messages count toward this sprint, so talk with a parent before you post anywhere public - a forum, a subreddit, a group chat beyond people you already know - and get their okay on where you are posting and what you are sharing about yourself.

Make

An Outreach Tracker (name, channel, date, message, reply, used?) plus 3 message templates - a DM, an email, and a community post - each opening with an honest "I'm a student building this" line.

Checkpoint

100 touches logged in your tracker.
