Levels on launching many products, watching most of them fail, and continuing to ship anyway.

Why it matters

You have spent this whole stage sending your thing to strangers, watching them use it, and fixing what confused them. This lesson closes the loop: you look honestly at what actually happened, and you start telling people about it out loud, in public, on a weekly rhythm you will keep for the rest of this path.

A retro is not a highlight reel. You write down what you shipped, what you learned - including the parts that did not go the way you hoped - your real numbers, and what you are doing next. Some of your five launch attempts probably went nowhere. That is worth writing down plainly, not hiding. The point is not to look impressive; it is to build a habit of telling the truth about your own progress, to yourself first and then to whoever reads it.

This is also the Launch gate: 20 strangers who actually used your thing, or 100 logged outreach touches, whichever you got to first. Either one proves the same thing - that you put your product in front of people who did not already know you, and something real happened. Pull your numbers from your analytics and your outreach tracker, be honest about them, and submit what you actually have, not what you wish you had.

What to watch for

Pieter Levels: Programming, Viral AI Startups, and Digital Nomad Life | Lex Fridman Podcast #440

  • Watch for how many products he mentions launching, and how openly he talks about most of them going nowhere.
  • Notice that he keeps shipping anyway, treating each attempt as information rather than a verdict on himself.
  • Skip the parts about his specific tools; the mindset of continuing after a launch that fizzles is the lesson here.

Start with Claude

Bring Claude your raw numbers and notes from the past two weeks, and let it help you write an honest update instead of a polished one.

I'm writing Weekly Update #1 for the Launch stage of Make First. Here's what I shipped, what happened when I launched, my usage numbers, and anything that surprised me or did not work: [paste your notes and numbers].

Ask me questions if anything I've written sounds vague or too positive - push me to be specific and honest, including about what did not work. Help me organize this into the shipped, learned, numbers, next format, but keep it in my own words. Don't smooth over the parts that went badly; those are often the most useful part of the update.

Parent note

Weekly Update #1 gets posted publicly - a community, X, or LinkedIn - so talk with a parent first about where you are posting, what personal details you are comfortable sharing, and get their okay before it goes live.

Make

Checkpoint

LAUNCH GATE. Analytics or screenshots showing 20 strangers used it, or 100 logged outreach touches.
